Malignant Mesothelioma is the most serious of all asbestos-related diseases. It is a rare cancer that occurs in the tissue covering the outside surface of the lung (pleural tissue) or in the tissue covering the stomach and bowels (peritoneal tissue).

Virtually all cases of malignant mesothelioma are caused by asbestos exposure. Asbestos fibers are inhaled or swallowed and work their way to the outside surface of the lung or the outside surface of the bowel where they become trapped. Pleural mesothelioma is cancer of the pleura, which is a membrane that lines the pleural cavities around the lungs. When inhaled, asbestos fibers are absorbed into the lungs, eventually making their way to the edges of the lungs and into the pleura, causing lesions and scarring. Eventually, malignant mesothelioma cancer develops as a result of the damage caused by the asbestos fibers.

Peritoneal mesothelioma is rarer than pleural mesothelioma and affects the lining of the abdomen rather than the lining of the lungs and chest cavity as in pleural mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma treatments include surgery to remove cancerous tissue, radiation to shrink cancer tissue/cells, chemotherapy to stop the reproduction of cancer cells, and photodynamic therapy.
